Write for a newspaper

Mylapore Times, Adyar Times and Arcot Road Times, the neighbourhood newspapers offer children an opportunity to write for their newspapers in their issues in November.

This annual observance is in connection with the children's day celebrations and the newspapers reserve space for contributions from children in the issues of November.

Applications are invited from students of class 7 and above to report on local events, people and places.

Students should submit the applications mentioning the name, address, name of the school, age and hobbies along with contact phone numbers. Also, five lines on why the student wants to write for the neighbourhood newspapers, should also be enclosed.

Selected students will need to go out in their neighbourhood (Mylapore, Adyar or around K. K. Nagar / Virugambakkam areas, as the case may be) and do stories on the spot.

Best contributions will be awarded certificates of appreciation.

Letter writing contest

The Department of Posts, Govt. of India is conducting a letter writing contest for school children.
The competition will be held in two categories - Junior (class 6 - 8) and Senior (9 - 12)

The participants should write the letters on an Inland Letter Card in their own handwriting.
Letters can be in English or in Tamil.

There are five different topics to choose from in each category.
Students can write on any number of topics, but each letter should be in a separate Inland Letter.

Letters are to be posted to :

Harry Potter musicals

Just after the release of the final book of Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the first in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone comes alive in music!

Landing Stage, the youth theatre group is presentind this show at the Chinmaya Heritage Centre, Harrington Road, Chetpet on 26, 27, 28 and 29 July at 7.15 pm.

The musical is scripted by Manasi Subramaniam and directed by Aruna Ganesh Ram. The music is composed by Ashwath and choreography by Denver Nicholas. Mithan Devanesan's set design will adore the stage.

Donor passes will be available at Landmark (Nungambakkam, Citi Centre and Spencer Plaza) and will be priced at Rs. 400, Rs. 200 and Rs. 100 (balcony).
the proceeds from the show go toward the Madhuram Narayanan Centre for Exceptional Children.

This musical will have 40 children on stage. The organisers, Reach Out claim that this is the first time the city hosts so many children on the stage.

Camp Yakaboo at Hippocampus

Hippocampus in Abhiramapuram has a variety of camps for kids, this summer

The camps scheduled are for the age groups 3-14 years.
Art, Story telling, Dance, Journalism, Advertising, Pottery, Theater, Nature and Adventure Camps.

For kids of 8 years and above, a journalism camp - Young Reporter and Science workshop are interesting things to check.

Nature study camps for kids by Aavishkaar

Aavishkaar India, which has been taking children on adventure / nature camps during summer holiday since 2000, has come out with another camp for this year.

Its eco-tours division, Wild Indian Tours, is organising a series of jungle and nature study camps for children above the age of 9.

Science Field Trips

A 20 day summer science camp for the students of class 8 to 11 will be conducted by the Nehru Children's Cultural Association. The camp will be held from April 18 to May 10.

Students will be taken on a field trip everyday and the camp will be conducted at that place. The places include Kalpakkam and Neyveli Lignite Corporation also!

Turtles in conversation!

Olive-Kuppamma and Ridley-Suppamma, two of Chennai's sea turtles will have a unique conversation this weekend at a show in Chennai.

They will share with you story of their lives, and how they have survived on Chennai's coast against all odds. They will also tell you about their survival from hatchlings to young adults who have now returned to the beach of their birth, to lay their own eggs.

All through a puppetry show in Tamil!

Dr. R. Bhanumathi, Managing Trustee, Pavai Centre for Puppetry, will be the Chief Guest at the programme, and will give a short introduction and demonstration on puppetry, one of the most ancient forms of entertainment in the world.

The event organised by Naturequest, will be held at the Book Point Auditorium, 160 Anna Salai (Opp. Spencer Plaza), Chennai.

On April 21, 2007 at 7 pm.

The programme is open to all and entry free.

Be at the programme. After all, the ridleys are known to have nested since at least 400 AD at the beaches of Chennai.

Summer camp at Velachery

To be frank, summer camps for kids are aplenty in and around areas like T. Nagar, Mylapore and Adyar.
The kids are left with a few choices in the areas like Anna Nagar, K. K. Nagar and Velachery which have very good school and a lot of colonies have come up in the last few years.

Here is one summer camp I came across in Velachery.

It is organised by the neighbourhood newspaper Velachey Plus with supprt form Nachi Ice land.

A lot of activities - Foil work, candle making, straw arrangement, photography, embroidery, greeting and kite making are lined up.
The camp is open for kids stydying in 3 and four (juniors group) and classes 5 and 6 (seniors group)
It will be conducted from April 16 to 27.

Paint the Chariot - Contest on March 31, 8am

Have you ever been to a temple car festival? And wondered how beautiful the chariot is decorated with the God and Goddess seated inside?

Here is a chance to have a close look at the temple chariot, draw and paint it and win prizes too!
The contest starts at 8am on March 31.
Open to all kids in the age group of 8 to 12 years.

One of the famous temples in the city, Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore will be celebrating the 10 day festival from March 24. The chariot will be drawn around the Mada streets of Mylapore on March 30. The 'ther' (chariot) comes back to its parking place by the same evening.

All you have to do is to pack your drawing and painting kit (chart paper, pencil, eraser, ruler, colour pencils or crayons or water colour, etc.,) and be at the Sannidhi street in front of the 'ther'
You will sit around the place and draw the ther as you see in front of you!

Exciting?

No registration. Just land up there and enjoy the different experience.
The contest is organised by the neighbourhood newspaper Mylapore Times and a voluntary organisation Namma Mylapore.

Story telling sessions

Kathanaka - destination storytelling for kids!
It is a new venture by Spring Into Reading, based in K. K. Nagar.
Starting from March 1 story telling sessions will be conducted thrice a week - by the famed storytellers Jeeva Raghunath and Nandini Sridhar.
There will be classes for different age groups - 3 to 5 years, 6 to 8 years and 9 to 14 years.

Tumble Tots in Chennai

Tumble Tots was established in the UK in1979 by Bill Cosgrave, former coach for the British Olympic Gymnastics.
This is a play programme for kids in different age groups.
The programmes are available in three segments -
Gymbabes - for kids from 6 months onwards
Tumble Tots - for kids from the walking stage to 2 years
Gymbobes - for kids from school beginning age to seven years.

The programmes are conducted in activity stations for the different age groups and each session is of 45 minutes duration.

The Chennai centre of Tumble Tots is located at No. 48, I Floor, L. B. Road, Tiruvanmiyur. (Opp. IMCOPS)
